‘Where are you going Man, where are you going Earth...?’

From the very beginning, The Baltic Opera Festival has established itself as one of the largest open-air opera events in Europe. Renowned singer Tomasz Konieczny invites everyone to Gdańsk, Sopot and Gdynia for the upcoming edition of his original project, taking place on July 10-16.

The Third Edition of the Baltic Opera Festival 2025 – Concept and Programme

The year 2025 is marked by expectations related to the changing geopolitical and ecological situation in our world. In the face of the fratricidal war continuing beyond our eastern border, unrest in other strategic regions of the globe – such as the Gaza Strip – as well as the increasing isolation of the individual and the technologization of life, it is impossible not to reflect on human loneliness, the place of man in the surrounding reality, and the issue of the ongoing depletion of the Earth’s resources.

Baltic Opera Festival 2025 will explore the theme of the journey of a lonely wanderer – an excluded individual.

The key programme highlights of the 2025 Festival will include three stage productions:

  • A new production of Salome by Richard Strauss – a story of loneliness and the fate of the main character, a teenage girl raised by a morally questionable mother and her consort – King Herod. The story is set against the backdrop of the age-old socio-religious conflict of the Middle East. The performance will take place at the Forest Opera in Sopot.

  • The first ever staged interpretation of St. Luke Passion by Krzysztof Penderecki – a story about the solitary prophet, Christ. The performance will also be held at the Forest Opera in Sopot.

  • A staged version of Winterreise by Franz Schubert – a tale of a solitary lyrical journey, also inspired by the poetry of Krzysztof Kamil Baczyński, who died under tragic circumstances. The production touches on themes of loneliness, exile, and isolation. It will be shown in the space of 100cznia.pl in Gdańsk.

In our visual communication, we have chosen to depict the lonely wanderer outside the orbit of the planet – to emphatically underscore their isolation and the dangers that may await our civilisation in the near future.

This time, we ask loudly: Where are you going, Humanity? Where are you going, Earth?

The event is organised by the Baltic Opera in Gdańsk.

The Festival’s partner is the Dal Segno Institute Association.

Baltic Opera Festival 2025 is co-financed by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage.

Tomasz Konieczny – Artistic Director of the Baltic Opera Festival

At its core, the Baltic Opera Festival follows from my dream of making full use of the wonderful possibilities and world-class potential of the Forest Opera in Sopot, an extraordinary open-air venue with a history dating back to 1909.

Tomasz Konieczny studied acting at the Łódź Film School, followed by vocal studies at the Fryderyk Chopin Academy of Music in Warsaw and the Carl Maria von Weber Dresden University of Music under Professor Christian Elßner. He specialises in German music. His extensive career has taken him to the world’s top stages, including: Oper Leipzig, Metropolitan Opera, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Paris Opera, Carnegie Hall, Wiener Staatsoper, Teatro alla Scala, National Theatre of Japan in Tokyo, or Bayreuth Festival. In 2019, at the request of the leadership of the Wiener Staatsoper, he received the highest professional award in the German-speaking opera world: the title of the Österreichischer Kammersänger. In 2022, in recognition for his outstanding contribution to the development of Polish culture, he was presented with the Gold Gloria Artis Medal for Merits to Culture by the Minister of Culture and National Heritage of Poland.
