St. Luke Passion is a monumental vocal-instrumental work composed by Krzysztof Penderecki in 1966 to commemorate the millennium of Poland’s Christianization. The piece is based on texts from the Gospel of Luke, as well as liturgical and Latin passion hymns. The work combines modern compositional techniques, such as sonorism, with the traditional form of the Baroque passion. It is distinguished by its strong emotional charge, drama, and original sound, typically performed in concert form. The cast includes three soloists, anarrator, a boys’ choir, three mixed choirs, and an expanded orchestra.
The premiere took place on March 30, 1966, at the Münster Cathedral in Germany, earning Penderecki international acclaim and confirming his status as one of the most important composers of the 20th century.
In line with the vision of the Baltic Opera Festival’s artistic director, Tomasz Konieczny, this extraordinary work will be presented for the first time at the Forest Opera in Sopot as a performative oratorio enriched with stage creation.
