In 2026, on the 150th anniversary of the premiere of The Ring of the Nibelung, the Baltic Opera Festival presents Die Walküre – the second part of Richard Wagner’s monumental tetralogy.

The world premiere of the complete cycle took place in 1876 at the Bayreuth Festspielhaus, on the initiative of the composer himself, opening a new era in the history of music theatre. Die Walküre, a drama of love, power, and the conflict between law and compassion, remains one of the most moving and most frequently performed parts of the entire tetralogy.

The second part of The Ring of the Nibelung is not only about monumental ensemble scenes, but above all a drama focused on relationships: the forbidden love of Siegmund and Sieglinde, Brünnhilde’s rebellion, and Wotan’s paternal torment. Wagner’s concept of music drama, founded on the idea of the “endless melody” and a system of leitmotifs, reaches its fullest expression here, building tension of extraordinary intensity.

Beyond the title heroine, one of the central figures of the work remains Wotan – the ruler of the gods, torn between power and conscience. The role will be performed by the Artistic Director of the Baltic Opera Festival, Tomasz Konieczny, who has been closely associated with the Wagnerian repertoire for many years and performs it on the world’s leading opera stages. His interpretations combine vocal power with deep psychological insight, shaping Wotan into a truly tragic figure in the fullest sense of the word.

Die Walküre is a story of love, rebellion, and the inevitability of fate – a drama of great passions and even greater responsibility that, 150 years on, continues to move audiences with its power and enduring relevance.
